Which events need a porta potty rental?
Any gathering where guests outnumber the indoor bathrooms needs a porta potty rental. A good starting point is 1 standard unit per 50 guests for an event up to 4 hours. Graduation parties, church festivals, block parties, youth sports and reunions all use the same planning rule.
- Graduation and birthday parties: keep 60 guests out of the house and off the septic system. One unit plus a hand wash station near the food table covers most backyard open houses.
- Church events: picnics, revivals, outdoor services and fish fries. Tax-exempt churches send their certificate and pay no sales tax.
- Community events and block parties: National Night Out, neighborhood cleanups and street parties. Public events need at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit.
- Festivals and fairs: long hours, big crowds and food vendors. Plan daily service for multi-day events.
- Sports: tournaments, 5Ks, practices and fields without restrooms. Season-long fields fit a monthly rental better.
How many porta potties does my event need?
Start with 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for up to 4 hours. Add 1 unit per 100 guests when the event runs longer than 4 hours, and 1 more per 100 guests when alcohol is served. With food or 50+ guests, add 1 hand wash station per 4 toilets.
| Event | Toilets | Hand wash stations | Accessible |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 guests, 3 hours, food | 1 | 1 | Recommended |
| 100 guests, 4 hours, food | 2 | 1 | 1 if public |
| 150 guests, 6 hours, bar, food | 7 | 2 | 1 |
| 300 guests, 8 hours, beer tent, food | 12 | 3 | 1 |
The 150-guest row works like this: 3 base units, plus 2 for running past 4 hours, plus 2 for the bar, equals 7. This method follows the event chart widely used in portable sanitation. Plug in your own numbers with the porta potty calculator.
Hot July and August afternoons in Dayton reach the mid-80s with humidity. For events over 4 hours in summer, add a unit or book a mid-event service.
Know your date?
A local dispatcher answers Mon–Sat, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.. Have your ZIP, dates and headcount ready, and you get an itemized price on the call.
How does weekend event porta potty rental delivery work?
Event porta potty rental for a weekend runs Friday to Monday at no extra charge. The unit is delivered Friday, or Saturday morning on request, and picked up Monday. No deliveries or pickups happen on Sunday, so a Sunday church service gets its unit Saturday or earlier.
Deliveries arrive between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. We can't promise an exact time, so the driver calls or texts about 30 minutes before arriving. That is why most events get the unit the day before.
- Weekday events: a Tuesday event can drop Monday and pick up Wednesday for the same flat rate.
- Nobody needs to be home: mark the spot with a cone, flag or chalk X, or text dispatch a photo.
- Book early: May–October weekends fill up, so book 1–2 weeks ahead.
The event price covers the whole period, not each day. Cancellation is free until 3 p.m. the business day before delivery.
Do event units get cleaned during the party?
Event porta potties arrive cleaned, pumped and stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. A 1–3 day event rental does not include a mid-event service visit. A $45 service visit can be booked for long or busy events, and multi-day festivals get daily service on the schedule.
A 60-gallon tank handles a typical backyard party without help. Big crowds, beer and summer heat fill it faster. If your event runs two days, or more than 100 guests share each unit, book a service between days.
A one-week rental from $195 includes 1 service, which fits a week-long camp or vacation Bible school.
Standard, deluxe or hand wash station: which costs less?
One deluxe flushing porta potty with a built-in sink starts at $245 for an event. A standard unit at $165 plus a separate hand wash station at $115 comes to $280. The deluxe costs less for one unit, but the separate station serves everyone, including the food line.
| Setup (event, Zone 1) | Starting price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 standard (PolyJohn PJN3) | $165 | Casual parties, sports, short events |
| 1 deluxe flushing with sink (PolyJohn Fleet) | $245 | Showers, older guests, one-unit backyard parties |
| 1 standard + 1 hand wash station | $280 | Food served, kids, guests washing without waiting |
| 2 standard + 1 hand wash station | $445 | About 100 guests with food |
| 2 deluxe flushing with sinks | $490 | About 100 guests, nicer setup |

The sink inside a deluxe flushing porta potty only helps the person inside. Guests who just need to wash before eating wait in line. A freestanding hand wash station has 2 foot-pump sinks open to anyone. Prices are before tax and Zone 2–3 travel fees.
Does a public event need a wheelchair-accessible unit?
At least 5% of the porta potties in each cluster must be accessible under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2, with a minimum of 1 at public events. A wheelchair-accessible PolyJohn Comfort XL has a 32-inch door, no step and handrails. Event rental starts at $235.
Source: 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. An accessible unit needs a 60-inch turning circle or T-shaped space, and the path to it needs about 66 inches clear. Put it on firm, level ground at the end of the row closest to parking.
Parents with strollers and caregivers use it too. Details and specs are on the wheelchair-accessible porta potty page. Whether a site meets ADA rules depends on the full setup, so check with your event organizer.
Do I need a permit for a porta potty in a park or street?
A porta potty on private property usually needs no permit. Placing a unit in a city park, a public street, a sidewalk or the tree lawn usually needs a permit from that city. Block parties and park festivals should call the city's parks department or engineering office well before the event date.
Homeowner associations may limit where a unit sits or how long it stays, so ask the HOA before a neighborhood party. Churches and schools can usually place units on their own lots.
Our porta potty permit guide covers who to call. Confirm the rules with the city or venue; we don't give legal advice.
Common questions
How many people does one porta potty accommodate?
One standard porta potty covers about 50 guests for an event up to 4 hours. Longer events and alcohol each add 1 unit per 100 guests. For a one-day party of about 50 people with no bar, one unit is enough.
Can it come the morning of the event?
Saturday-morning delivery is available on request for weekend events, but delivery runs 7 a.m.–5 p.m. with no exact arrival time. For a 2 p.m. start, the day before is safer. We add a morning-drop note and honor it when the route allows.
Is there an extra charge for delivering Friday and picking up Monday?
Friday delivery and Monday pickup cost nothing extra. The event price is a flat rate for the whole period, from $165 for a standard unit in Zone 1. Day-before delivery for a weekday event is the same flat rate too.
Can you deliver on Sunday for our church service?
Sunday deliveries and pickups are not available. For a Sunday service, the unit arrives Friday or Saturday and is picked up Monday, with no extra charge for the extra days.
Is the price per day or for the whole event?
The price covers the whole 1–3 day event, not each day. A standard unit starts at $165 with delivery and pickup in Zone 1. A one-week rental starts at $195 and includes 1 service visit.
Can I add a hand wash station or second unit after I book?
Call or text dispatch to add a unit before delivery day. Adding it early keeps everything on the same truck. Dispatch sends an updated quote that lists every line, so you see the new total before delivery day.
Can I rent one handicap unit and one regular unit?
Mixing units is common. A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $235 for an event, and a standard unit at $165. Many church and community events order one of each so every guest has a usable restroom.
