When does a porta potty rental for home make sense?

A porta potty rental for home makes sense whenever the house bathroom is out of service or too small for the crowd. A one-week rental starts at $195 with 1 service. Common reasons are kitchen or bathroom remodels, a failed septic system and backyard parties.

  • Bathroom remodel: the only toilet is pulled for 1–3 weeks, and the family still needs one.
  • Kitchen remodel: many contractors ask homeowners to provide a toilet so crews stay out of the house.
  • Septic or sewer failure: the toilets cannot be flushed until the repair is done.
  • Backyard parties and reunions: 40 guests and one hall bathroom do not mix, and a separate unit spares the septic system.
  • Roof, siding or addition work: crews need a toilet for the length of the job.

Ordering for a parent or a rental house works too. Add a second contact so the driver can reach the right person.

One week or 28 days: which home rental plan fits?

A one-week home rental starts at $195 and includes 1 service. A 28-day rental starts at $175 per cycle plus a one-time $75 delivery and pickup, with weekly service. For a remodel longer than about 1 week, the 28-day plan usually costs less.

Event, 1–3 days$165Arrives cleaned; none duringBackyard party, reunion
One week$1951 service includedShort bathroom job
28-day cycle$175 + $75 delivery and pickupWeeklyRemodels, septic repair, additions

A 3-week bathroom remodel shows the difference. Three one-week rentals start at $585, while one 28-day cycle starts at $250 with delivery and pickup. Billing on a 28-day rental stops the day you ask for pickup.

Want a flushing toilet and a sink for the family? A deluxe flushing porta potty starts at $265 per 28-day cycle plus delivery. Prices are before tax; see the rental cost guide for zone fees.

My septic failed. How fast can a home porta potty arrive?

Same-day delivery is available Monday through Saturday when you call by 12:00 noon in Zones 1 and 2, for a flat $50 rush fee. The dispatcher confirms on the call whether a truck can make it. Calls after noon get next-day delivery.

Septic repairs often take longer than planned. Start on the 28-day plan so you are not paying for a short rental twice. Billing stops the day the repair is done and you request pickup.

Where can the porta potty go at my house?

A home porta potty can go on the driveway, beside the garage or in the backyard, on firm, level ground. The spot must be within about 15 feet of where the truck can park, or along a path the crew can roll a dolly. Gates need 48 inches clear.

Examples of portable toilets placed beside homes and driveways
Examples of portable toilets placed beside homes and driveways
  • Gate width: a standard unit is 43.5 inches wide, so a normal single gate with 48 inches clear works. A wheelchair-accessible unit needs about 66 inches.
  • Slopes: a mild slope is fine; a steep front yard is not.
  • Overhead: tell dispatch about low wires, branches or gutters.
  • Driveway: leave room to park cars and for the service truck to reach the unit each week.

The porta potty placement guide has more examples.

Will a porta potty damage my lawn or driveway?

A standard porta potty sits on a footprint about 43.5 by 47 inches, so lawn damage is usually limited to flattened or yellowed grass under the base. Grass usually recovers within a few weeks. The bigger risk is the truck on a soft lawn, so tell dispatch about wet or newly seeded areas.

On a driveway, the unit sits flat on concrete or asphalt with no anchors. Pavers and fresh sealcoat are worth mentioning to dispatch so the crew picks a better spot.

After a heavy rain, a dolly path across soft grass can rut. Pick a spot near the drive in spring, or ask for a morning-drop note so the crew comes before afternoon storms when the route allows.

What about neighbors, privacy and HOA rules?

Face the porta potty door toward your house or fence, not the street or a neighbor's window. A unit on your own property usually needs no permit, but a unit in the street or tree lawn usually needs one from the city. HOAs may limit where a unit sits or for how long.

Behind the garage or along a side fence keeps the unit out of view. A free padlock hasp stops passersby and late-night visitors from using it. Leave the key on a hook inside the garage or tell dispatch where it goes for service day.

Ask your HOA before delivery if your neighborhood has rules on temporary structures. The porta potty permit guide explains when a city permit applies.

Do I need to be home for delivery or service?

Nobody needs to be home for delivery, weekly service or pickup. Mark the spot with a cone, flag or chalk X, or text dispatch a photo with an arrow. Deliveries run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the driver calls or texts about 30 minutes before arriving.

If the unit sits behind a locked gate, text the gate code or leave the gate unlatched on delivery and service days. Pets should stay inside while the crew is in the yard.

Pay by card over the phone or by a secure text or email pay link. Nothing needs to be printed or signed on paper.

Common questions

My contractor says I need a porta potty for the kitchen remodel. How does this work?

Call or text with your address, start date and the spot you want. A 28-day rental starts at $175 plus $75 delivery and pickup, with weekly service. The unit stays until you request pickup, and billing stops that day.

Can I rent a porta potty at my house for about a week?

A one-week home rental starts at $195 for a standard unit and includes 1 service visit. If the job runs long, switch to the 28-day plan instead of booking another week.

It's construction, but it's at my house. Is the price different from a business?

Homeowners and contractors pay the same starting prices. A standard unit is $175 per 28-day cycle plus $75 delivery and pickup, or $195 for one week. Your quote lists every line before you pay.

Does a porta potty need to hook up to water or power?

A standard porta potty needs no hookups. The PolyJohn PJN3 has its own 60-gallon holding tank and arrives ready to use, with toilet paper, a urinal and hand sanitizer inside.

Will it smell near the house?

Weekly service pumps the tank and refills the blue deodorizer, which keeps odor low. Place the unit at least a few steps from windows and doors, and keep the door facing away from the patio. Summer heat makes weekly service more important.

If I lock it, how do you get the key at pickup?

Tell dispatch where the key or combination will be, such as under the unit or on a hook in the garage. The padlock hasp is free. For your own lock, text the combination before service day.

Can it go in the backyard?

Backyard placement works when there is a path at least 48 inches wide from where the truck parks, on firm and fairly level ground. Tell dispatch about steps, soft lawn or narrow gates so the crew plans the route.
