How are porta potties cleaned?

Porta potties are cleaned on site by a service truck with a vacuum tank and a fresh-water tank. The crew pumps the 60-gallon holding tank, scrubs every surface, adds a fresh charge of water and blue deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper and sanitizer. A normal visit takes a few minutes per unit.

The unit stays where it is. Nothing gets hauled away except the waste, which goes to an approved wastewater disposal site.

Long-term rentals get this visit every week. Event rentals arrive cleaned and stocked, and get a mid-event visit only when one is booked.

What happens during a porta potty service visit?

A porta potty service visit has 8 steps: check the site, pump the tank, wash the inside, wipe touch points, recharge the tank, restock supplies, check the hardware and log the visit. Deluxe units and hand wash stations also get fresh water, soap and towels.

  1. Check the site. The driver looks at the unit for damage, tipping or anything blocking the door.
  2. Pump the tank. A vacuum hose empties the holding tank, paper and all.
  3. Wash the inside. The crew sprays and scrubs the seat, urinal, walls and floor.
  4. Wipe touch points. Door handles, latch, toilet paper holders and the sanitizer dispenser get wiped down.
  5. Recharge the tank. A few gallons of fresh water and blue deodorizer go back in. From November through March, antifreeze or brine goes in too.
  6. Restock. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are refilled. Deluxe units get flush water, soap and paper towels.
  7. Check the hardware. The crew checks the occupancy latch, vent pipe, door spring and any padlock hasp.
  8. Log the visit. You get a service slip or text after each visit.

What is the blue liquid in a porta potty?

The blue liquid in a porta potty is a deodorizer charge: a few gallons of water mixed with chemical that controls odor and slows bacteria. The blue color hides what is in the tank. The deodorizer weakens as the tank fills, so the charge is replaced at every service visit.

The charge works best when the tank is not overloaded. A tank used by too many people, or in July heat, runs out of deodorizing power before the next visit.

Hand wash stations get a separate service. The crew empties the 24-gallon gray water tank, refills 22 gallons of fresh water, and restocks soap and towels.

Please do not add your own bleach or cleaners to the tank. Household chemicals can react with the deodorizer and make odor worse.

How often are porta potties cleaned?

Porta potties on a 28-day or long-term rental are cleaned once a week. Event rentals arrive clean and stocked, with no mid-event visit unless one is booked for $45. Big or multi-day events get daily service, and job site units serving more than 10 workers get a second weekly visit.

What can I do between porta potty services?

Between services, keep the door closed, keep spare toilet paper off the floor, and put a lined trash can beside the porta potty. Place the porta potty in afternoon shade in summer. Those four habits cut odor and keep trash out of the tank until the next visit.

  • Close the door. The vent pipe pulls air out best when the door is shut.
  • Add a trash can. People drop wrappers, bottles and wipes in the tank when no can is nearby.
  • Store spare rolls dry. A sealed bag on the shelf keeps paper off a wet floor.
  • Shade in summer. Dayton summer highs reach the mid-80s with humidity, and heat speeds odor.
  • Report problems early. Text dispatch about a broken latch or a full tank right away.

Placement makes a big difference too. Our porta potty placement guide covers shade, wind and distance from food.

What should never go in a porta potty tank?

Only human waste and toilet paper should go in a porta potty tank. Trash, wipes, diapers, feminine products, bottles, gloves, paint, solvents, oil and concrete washout clog the vacuum hose or damage the tank. Some items, like solvents, can make a tank impossible to pump on a normal visit.

Never put in the tankWhy
Wipes, diapers, feminine productsDo not break down and clog the vacuum hose
Bottles, cans, cups, foodJam the hose and fill the tank
Gloves, rags, clothing, PPEWrap around the hose intake
Paint, solvents, oil, fuelHazardous; the tank cannot be pumped normally
Drywall mud, concrete, grout washoutSets up hard in the tank
Bleach or household cleanersReact with the deodorizer

A lined trash can beside the unit solves most of these. On job sites, a clear rule at the morning meeting helps.

When does a porta potty need extra service?

A porta potty needs extra service when the tank level is close to the seat, the smell stays strong after a day, or toilet paper and sanitizer run out before the next visit. An extra visit costs $45 in Zones 1–2 and usually happens the next business day.

  • The tank level is visible near the seat opening.
  • Odor stays strong even with the door closed.
  • Paper or sanitizer runs out mid-week.
  • Your crew grew, or a heat wave hit.
  • The unit was tipped, vandalized or damaged.

Call or text (937) 230-2836 to add a visit. If you keep needing extra visits, it is often cheaper to add a second standard porta potty or a regular second weekly service.

Winter brings a few changes to servicing. See renting a porta potty in an Ohio winter.

Common questions

Are porta potties pumped where they sit?

Porta potties are pumped and cleaned in place by a service truck. The truck needs a drivable spot within about 15 feet of the unit. Nothing is moved unless the unit is damaged.

Will a porta potty smell?

A porta potty that is serviced on schedule and not overloaded has only a mild odor. Odor grows with heat, heavy use and trash in the tank. Shade, a closed door and a nearby trash can help most.

Can I clean the porta potty myself between visits?

Wiping the seat and door handle with a disinfecting wipe is fine; throw the wipe in a trash can, not the tank. Please do not pour bleach or cleaners into the tank, because they react with the deodorizer.

Where does the waste go after pumping?

The waste is hauled in the service truck's sealed tank to an approved wastewater disposal site for treatment. It is never dumped on site, on the ground or in a storm drain.

Do event porta potty rentals include cleaning?

Event units arrive cleaned and stocked for the weekend. A mid-event cleaning costs $45 per visit, and big or multi-day events can book daily service.
