Renting a Porta Potty in an Ohio Winter: What Changes

A porta potty in winter in Ohio works fine with a few changes: antifreeze in the tank, a shoveled path, and a spot out of the wind. Here is what to expect from November through March.

How cold does Dayton get in winter?

Dayton's normal January low is about 22°F and the normal January high is about 37°F, according to National Weather Service 1991–2020 normals. Dayton averages about 8.3 inches of snow in January and roughly 20 inches from December through February. Porta potty tanks will freeze without treatment.

Do porta potties freeze in winter?

A porta potty tank can freeze when temperatures stay below 32°F. From November through March we add non-toxic antifreeze or brine to every tank at each service, at no extra charge. The treated liquid stays loose so the tank can be pumped and the deodorizer keeps working.

Freezing affects any unit that holds fresh water. A deluxe flushing porta potty uses flush water, and a hand wash station holds 22 gallons of fresh water. On hard-freeze days that water can freeze, so ask dispatch before booking either one for a winter job.

Every standard unit has a hand sanitizer dispenser, which keeps working in the cold. For winter job sites, a standard unit with sanitizer is the simplest setup. Heated hand washing is a specialty request; call dispatch to talk through options for your dates.

A restroom trailer has heat, but the trailer needs steady power to keep its water lines from freezing. A tripped breaker on a cold night can freeze the plumbing.

Where should a porta potty go in winter?

In winter, put the porta potty on the south side of a building or fence, out of the north and west wind. Sun warms the walls a few degrees, and a windbreak keeps the door from slamming. Keep the porta potty away from roof edges and snowplow piles.

  • Face the door away from the wind. Cold winter winds in Ohio often blow from the west and northwest.
  • Stay clear of roof drip lines. Snow and ice slide off roofs and can bury or crack the unit.
  • Stay out of plow paths. In parking lots, ask whoever plows where snow gets pushed. Do not put the unit there.
  • Pick firm, level ground. Frozen ground is firm, but the same lawn turns to mud during a March thaw.
  • Mark the spot high. Use a tall flag or stake so the driver can find it above a snowbank.

Who clears the snow around a rented porta potty?

The renter keeps the path to the porta potty door and the truck access lane clear of snow and ice. The service truck needs a drivable route within about 15 feet of the porta potty. A shoveled, salted patch in front of the door also prevents slips.

Clear snow from the door side first. A drift against the door can freeze the door shut overnight.

If the lane is blocked on service day, the crew may not reach the unit. Text dispatch if the lot has not been plowed yet, and we will move the visit.

  • Use rock salt or sand on the path, not on the unit's plastic floor.
  • Knock heavy snow off the roof so the translucent roof still lets in daylight.
  • Keep a broom near the unit on long job sites.

Does winter change porta potty servicing?

Winter servicing follows the same weekly schedule: pump the tank, clean the inside, restock and add deodorizer. From November through March the crew also adds antifreeze or brine. Snowstorms can push a service visit by a day, and dispatch texts you when that happens.

Units used less often in winter still get serviced weekly on a 28-day rental. The visit keeps the antifreeze mix strong, even when the tank is not full.

Toilet paper stays drier in the cold, but condensation can still dampen it. Keep spare rolls inside a sealed bag in the unit.

Need an extra visit after a busy week? Extra service is $45 in Zones 1–2 and usually happens the next business day. Read how porta potties are cleaned for the full service visit.

Which porta potty works best for a winter job or event?

For a winter job site, a standard porta potty with hand sanitizer is the most reliable choice because there is no fresh water to freeze. For a winter wedding or holiday event, a heated restroom trailer is more comfortable if a 120V 20-amp outlet is within 100 feet.

Common questions

Do you charge extra for antifreeze in winter?

Antifreeze and brine are added at every service from November through March at no extra charge. The cost is part of the normal rental and weekly service price.

Can I rent a heated porta potty?

Standard porta potties are not heated. For a heated restroom, a restroom trailer with climate control is the usual answer, and it needs steady power. Call dispatch at (937) 230-2836 to talk through winter options.

What happens if the porta potty is buried in snow on service day?

The crew needs a clear lane and a shoveled door to service the unit. If the site is snowed in, text dispatch and the visit will be moved to the next day the lane is open.

Can I still get same-day delivery in winter?

Same-day delivery runs Monday through Saturday when you call by noon in Zones 1 and 2, for a $50 rush fee. Heavy snow can slow routes, and the dispatcher will tell you on the call whether a truck can make it.

Will the porta potty smell less in winter?

Cold weather slows odor, so a porta potty usually smells less in winter than in July. The deodorizer still gets refreshed at every weekly service along with the antifreeze.
